Runway for Refuge: A Night of Fashion, Generosity, and Empowerment
On the evening of September 6, the Plymouth International Hotel was filled with a buzz of excitement and purpose as fundraising event, Runway for Refuge came to fruition. The event was once again a sell out and raised a phenomenal $45,000.00.
The Runway for Refuge committee brought together some of New Zealand’s top designers, fashion lovers, and generous supporters for an unforgettable evening. Guests were treated to a spectacular fashion show, featuring pieces from iconic designers such as Trelise Cooper, Dorothy., Blak, Zambesi, Juliette Hogan, JPalm, and Otsu. Each model walked the runway with grace, all while showcasing designs that celebrated not only fashion but the incredible strength of women.
The evening was expertly hosted by Anna Richardson, whose warmth and enthusiasm set the perfect tone for a night dedicated to women supporting women. Guests enjoyed an informed panel discussion beautifully led by Dame Judy Bailey, with inspiring guest speakers Dr. Ang Jury (CEO of Women’s Refuge), survivor Mitch Martin, and Social Worker Sam. These voices reminded us all of the importance of coming together to make real change.
While the fashion was certainly a highlight, what made the night truly special was the overwhelming sense of community. This was a celebration of women, and the collective spirit of the evening was palpable.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of local businesses and supporters there were also 50 silent auction items available via the Handbid app. Bidders went home with some incredible treasures, and importantly, they went home knowing their contributions would directly benefit the women and children who rely on Taranaki Women’s Refuge for safety, support, and a path to rebuild their lives.
We are beyond grateful to the committee and everyone who made Runway for Refuge such a success. The funds raised will go a long way in supporting the Refuge’s vital work. We hope to see you all again next year—until then, let’s keep this collective force moving towards a world where every woman and child is safe, valued and able to thrive.
